Phenols

Phenols are extremely harmful and water polluting to the environment. As a pure substance, they rarely occur in nature and are therefore produced synthetically.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) belongs to the group of chlorophenols. PCP is used in conventional cotton production. As a preservative, PCP is found in textiles, wood and leather. In Germany, the production of PCP and PCP-containing materials is prohibited.

However, some countries such as USA, France, India, Taiwan and China continue to produce and use PCP. Thus, products containing PCP can also reach Germany through imports. PCP can damage the liver and kidneys through the skin. In animal experiments, it was found to have a carcinogenic effect.

Tetrachlorophenol (TeCP) also belongs to the group of chlorophenols. TeCP is used as a fertilizer, pesticide and wood preservative. It is highly hazardous to human health and very dangerous to aquatic organisms.
