Phthalates

Phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers for plastics. However, they are also found in perfumes, deodorants and textile auxiliaries. DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) is the most commonly used phthalate. Global production of DEHP is estimated at 3 to 4 million tons annually.

Toxicological effects have not been adequately studied. Animal studies indicate a carcinogenic potential of phthalates. Serious liver and kidney damage is to be feared in the event of prolonged contact. For our fabrics and ingredients used, the GOTS standard limits the use of phthalates to a very low amount: < 100 mg/kg.
